Today in History Feb 22, 1980 The "Miracle on Ice"

I remember watching this whole series during the Winter Olympics in 1980.  This is still the most exciting sporting event I have ever seen in my life.

The Night Sky and you

All your atoms heavier than lithium had to have been created inside a star.  Think about that for a moment.  Essentially when you look at at the Night Sky it is the Universe looking back onto itself.

I LOVE this idea.

In the words of Carl Sagan:

"The Cosmos is within us.  We are made of Star-Stuff.  We are a way for the Universe to know itself."

Just Ridiculous!

He's Scruffy and sweet.

Stares like this when he wants a treat.

Has there ever been a dog as fine?

As little scruffy Einstein?

Feb 14 , 1990 The Pale Blue Dot

35 Years ago on Feb 14, 1990 the NASA Voyager I spacecraft turned it's camera around and snapped a photo of it's home. This iconic photo is known as the "Pale Blue Dot" photo.  That little white speck is Earth, our home.

Kind of puts it all in perspective doesn't it?

Our purpose should be to take care of our world and nurture it.  Every decision we ever make should be for that purpose.  It is really that simple.

" Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every ‘superstar,’ every ‘supreme leader,’ every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." - Carl Sagan

Happiness is just so easy!

Imagine being a 15 Billion Year old Proton

You were created in the core of  one of the early Protostars shortly after the Big Bang.   You churned around in the core of your home star for at least 100,000 years before finally reaching the surface and beginning you journy though the cosmos.

For over 13 billion years you have traveled.  Since time is relative it means nothing to you as you travel at the speed of light.

When you journey started our sun and earth did not exist.   You were in existence as the stars that make up the heavy elements of our solar system where born, lived, and died.

Finally our solar system formed but your journey was still not over.

You were moving when the Mars sized planet Theia collided with the early Earth  and formed the  Moon.  You were moving as the ocean formed, the atmosphere evolved, and finally life began to thrive.

You were still moving as multiple waves of extinctions changed the course of life on this planet.  Finally you arrived.  You race in at 186,000 miles a second only to be stopped from reaching the surface of Earth by some numskull whose shadow is proof of your failure.

The Saddest Song I have ever heard...

For at least 15 million years the Family of Mohoidae birds existed.

Common on the island of Kauai till the mid-twentieth century where the introduction of predictors, climate change, and loss of habitat lead to their extinction.

The entire line of birds ended with the last known male singing for his mate in 1987. This sad love song was caught on tape never to be heard again. Normally a duet you can hear the male sing and then wait for a response from a female that never comes.

So "rushing" does save time.....

Fish Face Photo Book by Atsushi Morioka - I tend to make some of these faces every day!

Fish Face Photo Book by Atsushi Morioka:

Captured when the various aquarium fish were “in good spirits”,  Atsushi Morioka shows us the diverse and often comical faces of goldfish and other koi varieties.

The collection of fish photographed now numbers in the hundreds, thanks to Morioka’s ever-growing collection on Instagram.

It’s unique to think about goldfish with personalities, but as these photos show, each one has its own distinct vibe.
